Not every gearbox manufacturer does this. So why do we spend hours running our gearboxes on the test stand? Today, let’s talk about what test running is really about.
What exactly are we testing for?
A test run isn’t just about powering up the gearbox and letting it spin. It’s about simulating how it will perform on your production line. During these 4 to 6 hours, we focus on four key aspects:
- Listening to the sound
We check whether the gearbox sounds clean at start-up and whether any abnormal noise develops as it warms up. Some subtle assembly deviations don’t show up when cold — they only emerge as temperatures rise.
- Monitoring temperature
We track how quickly and steadily bearing temperatures rise. If temperatures keep climbing without stabilizing, it indicates abnormal friction somewhere inside, or that bearing preload hasn’t been set correctly.
- Checking vibration and runout
We measure output shaft radial runout with a dial gauge while simultaneously feeling the housing for vibration. Excessive runout or abnormal vibration points to incorrect bearing clearance, gear mesh issues, or misalignment.
- Inspecting for oil leakage
A gearbox that doesn’t leak when static may still leak under operating conditions. Under load, seals need time to seat properly. After several hours of continuous running, any seepage or micro-leakage becomes immediately visible.
Is 4 to 6 hours really enough? Actually, it’s already critical.
In engineering, there’s a concept called the “bathtub curve” — equipment is most likely to fail during two periods: early failure (just after start-up) and wear-out failure (at the end of service life).
Our 4- to 6-hour test run covers exactly the early failure phase. Any assembly issues, incomplete seal seating, or abnormal bearing temperature rise will all surface within this window.
In plain terms: if it’s going to fail, it will fail right away. If it runs stable through this phase, it will stay stable going forward.
The test run is our internal process — but what does it mean for you?
Yes, test running costs us time. But for you, it means:
· Less trial and error on your end. If a gearbox arrives on your production line with noise, leakage, or overheating, you’d have to shut down, remove it, and send it back for repair — days of downtime. A single day of production loss often costs far more than the gearbox itself. We solve these issues in our workshop, so your line can go live immediately.

Every gearbox we ship undergoes a staged load test running continuously for 4 to 6 hours. Throughout the process, we monitor and record noise, temperature rise, vibration, runout, and other key parameters in real time. Only when all values remain stable within specification does the gearbox proceed to the next stage — packaging and delivery.
