The oil in your gearbox does more than just lubricate — it also carries heat away. When oil gets contaminated, friction heat builds up rapidly at gear meshing points and bearing raceways. This not only damages gears and bearings but also leads to severe overheating and eventual failure. That’s why your gearbox needs regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance — just like your car.
When should you change the oil? You don’t need to watch the clock — just look at the color and smell it.
Fresh gear oil is translucent. When the oil turns dark or black, or develops a burnt odor, it’s past its useful life — either oxidized from high temperatures or contaminated with metal wear particles. If you don’t change it at this point, gear and bearing wear will follow shortly.
Here’s the catch: don’t wait until the oil is already black. Change it when it’s about to turn.
By the time gears are damaged, it’s too late — and far more expensive than an oil change.
